I've never ripped hardwood with my jig saw, but the WRC Nikumi frame pictured
below was ripped with a jig saw... all stringers and cross sections. I tried
the fence, but found it to be a pain, so I just did it freehand cutting along
a pencil line. It takes practice and concentration to get it right.

It was just an experiment as I normally use a circular saw with
fence...blashphemy for sure :) The Link below talks about this a bit more.
