I found that the green painters masking tape in 1.5" wide works well. I never had to clean up any residue. You rip the occasional piece. Depending on how tight you want the joint along the length of the boat, I typically ended up with 4-5 strips between forms.

I addition I also used the wedges and U-bracked as outlined by Tom Moore.

I comes down how picky you are. This is a slow method - 1 -2 strips per evening.
