I have made footbraces with the "T" section part of the rail bonded to the underside of the deck. I keep the hook portion in the same place between your legs. this system works great. you do get the added foot room with the same functionallity.

I have had some problems makeing the foot braces slide freely on the track, partly due to the geometry of the retaining rope relative to the track.
