In Response To: Slot & spring clamp method?? (Kurt)

: Hello to all,

: In an earlier thread someone asked about stapleless building. It was remarked
: that Joe Greenley of "Redfish Kayaks" uses the slot & spring
: clamp method and produces tight joints in his boats.

: Can anyone describe to me what the "slot and spring clamp" method
: is?!

: Thanks, Kurt

Hey Kurt

I couldn't find the picture I was looking for, but I ran out to my friends house and shot this picture with the trusty ole Polaroid. It was dark, so the picture quality isn't too good. This is one of his canoe forms, but you get the idea. Just run the groove all the way around. This method will allow you to use the 1" spring clamps as apposed to the other style which would require a larger clamp and a bit more expense.

The other picture I had showed the strips in place for a canoe under construction and how the clamps were used. I hope you can get the idea from this pic.

He builds 3 or 4 canoes at a time and as fast as he can walk around with the glue, strips, clamps and saw for the stems, he can do each boat one after the other and when he's done with one trip, the glue is dry enough to start another trip. It takes very little time to strip the 4 boats this way. Hope this helps!!
