Betsie Bay normally mountes their hatches like you see here, but they also have another option -- they mount the ring under the deck and mount the wood cut-out to the hatch lid, to get a flush hatch that's almost invisible. The Beckson hatch is just a press-fit with a large O-ring around the perimeter.

I think a press-in hatch would be a lot easier to access behind you than the screw-in type, and although there's no positive latch to keep it in place, they stay in place as long as there's no internal pressure -- so keep your bulkheads vented.

These Beckson hatches are available through West Marine for something like $16.
