Exactly right. My text was not particularly clear on that point - the "ugliness" was streaks & variations in opacity. Sorry for the vagueness.

I might have had better luck if I'd started with pigmented, rather than doing the initial wet-out with clear then trying to cover with fill coats later. But I still suspect it'll be difficult to get a good, structurally sound, opaque epoxy layer that's not too thick.
