glass strands on cut material

Im building a guilemont my first boat and I glassed the bottom last night used 6 oz material three layers 1 the whole boat, 1 layer between the chines, 1 layer at the bow & stern. as I was squegeeing the second layer some of the material started to unravel at the chine, what should I have done, I Know what I did im not very happy with the results. do I put the fill coat on before sanding my boo-boos, any helpfull hints on doing glass would be appreciated
