: I'm about to start a boat based on the Greenland Kayak In Robert Morris?
: book. My choices for gunwales are pretty much Red Cedar or Douglas Fir. My
: preference is for the cedar, but I am concerned about strength. Any
: advise? Thanks

If it is your first SOF then go with doug fir, 5/8" thick saves on weight and is plenty strong.

Red cedar will work but is kind of marginal as it is prone to splitting at lashing/pegging locations - I wouldn't use it for anyone over 140 lbs
