Ding! Ding! Bethune, you dummy! Thanks, Shawn, for triggering the answer to my own perplexities about the compass deviation issue, which should have occurred immediately to a 40-year boater like myself: Any pump with significant magnetic draw to it is not saltwater compatible; SS that's marine-grade is indeed minimally magnetic. Isn't that how I've tested SS fittings of uncertain quality before using them? DUhhhh...

Just run the same check on all parts you're using for the installation and you're home free.
