hi Mike;
i have a very cheap tablesaw, with a terrible fence (another storey). i have had very good luck with inexpensive 7 1/4 inch "hollow ground planer". the blade adjusts just a bit higher than a one inch thick board. the smaller blade is easier on the saw's motor. the blade leaves a very smooth finish and the kerf is the smallest you'll find short of a bandsaw.
