i wonder if you take the two ends and overlap them by say 3 inches, clamp across both at each end of the three inches and pull apart as far as they'll go- about 6 inches.
so now you have 2 side by side stretched bungees with 6 inches or so between the clamps. Cut the nylon covering ONLY on each bungee on the clamp side of its short end- say by only 1 inch past the midpt. Unravel the covering on each back past the mid pt by 1/2 inch.

Whip the rubber of each to each other and cut off the free ends tight to the whipping. Ravel(is that a word??) one nylon covering over the whipping and pull it tight as possible, melt or soak w/ CA. then ravel the other nylon covering over the last covering and gently melt or CA to it, so now the covering is back to continuous for a second level of security.

Depending on how much you can unravel, might just work for a virtually invisible join. A little stiff for an inch or so tho.
