That's probably the trick that Ray Irons showed me at R2K1: using SuperGlue to attach the ends of bungie cords to each other. I tried it last night, and it works great (so far). Tape the cord (black duct tape works well), use a CutzAll to get a clean cut, put a dab of glue on one end (get the glue that works on rubber) line them up and shove them carefully together. Ray then hid the joint within the web padeye on his boats. You could just use black tape to cover the joint and it would still look clean.
Ray claims the glue joints hold pretty well -- I gave my joints a good tug (I'm using this set-up for my spare paddle strap) but I'm not sure I want to trust my rear deck figure eight to the glue. I've used a water knot for that (that's the climber's term that Nick's diagram illustrates.
