: I am not very satisfied with the results of making a "Vaclav style"
: coaming for my son's plywood walrus and am wondering about a plywood lip
: (like Pygmy) instead.
: The fiberglass version came out pretty wavey with a few bubbles etc, It just
: doesn't look that good. I used black pigment (System 3) to color the epoxy
: and that helps somewhat but it still looks funny. I'll add a few fill
: coats and try to sand it smooth but I probably will not end up using it.
: I don't have any experience with the plywood lip and was wondering about
: epoxying a 2 piece lip made from 3mm lauan onto the top of the coaming
: upright strips, using a woodflour thickened epoxy fillet on the underside
: and then glass over the top and down the inside of the uprights and around
: into the cockpit.
: 2 Questions: Will the 1/4" upright strips be thick and strong enough to
: do the pygmy style lip?
: And, is 3mm thick enough or should I double it?
Even if 1/4" and 3mm is too thin for the final coaming, you can always add glass. I only have a 3/16" thick veneer coaming riser, but with glass on both sides, it's bomber. My coaming lip is built up of 1/16" thick veneer strips, and is only 1/8" thick overall, but is tough, again because of glass.
Figuring the amount of wear and tear a coaming gets, glass is a good idea for scratch/durability, strength notwithstanding.

: Any other insights would be welcome
