Patsy, my kayak was wider then most and I was able to built in two water tight side compartments that stayed completely dry for my field glasses, camera and radio. Before you build, you might do a little scratch drawing to see if you can come up with any thing that would fit in yours. But, here is another thought. I had my map pouch fastened to the front edge of the deck and it layed down into my lap. Once in a while I put my camera or field glasses in it as a holder and water protection. The top edge was velcro sealed and I could quickly get into it. It also had two velcro straps at the top edge to use to fasten to your kayak. Mine was a Granite Gear--14'x16". It wouldn't be 100% water proof but it worked for me.
