Shawn:

You're right about overkill, but hey, the nights are long, the water is cold, and I've got time to continue fussing with my kayak until I get a sunny Saturday for a spin on the Sound. (And I'll need time to work on Joe's perfect bungie joint.)

I hadn't taken UV degradation into account in this discussion. I received a note from Dave Strauss, the General Sales Manager for Samson Ropes, pointing out that ropes with a poly pro cover will last only a few years from UV degradation. Here's his response:

"The lightest line would be the SM Ultra-Lite, with a Poly Pro cover and dyneema core. It wouldn't absorb any water, and won't stretch. The poly cover will only last a couple of years from UV degradation. Other options in the double braid polyester area would be the LS Yacht Braid, XLS Yacht Braid, or Trophy Braid. The first two have smooth polyester covers, and the Trophy has a spun cover for grip. If you want more grip, then I would look at the Trophy Braid."

I'll post anymore responses I get from manufacturers regarding UV degradation.
