I have paddled my last 200 miles or so using a commercial carbon shaft paddle. I have paddled with all wood shafts and I can assure you that the carbon is warmer on a cold day. There is so little mass in the carbon fiber that it doesn't absorb the heat from your hands like either wood or fiberglass will.

Covering wood with glass would increase the durability but would do very little for stiffness and would add a huge amount of weight. The nice thing about the carbon paddle is the light weight.
