Kits vs plans - Merganser

Well, I must say I am overwhelmed by all this unexpected encouragement. And encouraged! You've got me thinking I might actually be able to do it.

The boat I'm thinking of building is the Shearwater Merganser 16. I was still
trying to decide between the S&G and the hybrid, which has a strip deck. I
go back and forth, wanting the beauty, challenge and experience of the strip deck but also liking the look of a "plain" deck. But if I'm going to do the whole thing by myself, I should probably stick with straight S&G for my first attempt.

So, I'll take you up on your offer. What does anyone think about the ease or difficulty of building a Merganser from plans versus from a kit?

As for the tools thing, I guess I've been thinking more in terms of the tools needed for ripping strips rather than just cutting out a few forms. I've got an electric drill, would just need the saw, the sander, and maybe a better plane and, of course, many, many clamps.

I began contemplating all of this as a paddler wanting a nicer boat but unable to afford the boat I want. I'm feeling a shift to being a builder, equally as interested in the building process as the finished product. Oh, oh.
