Good morning!
I have been following this thread because I am in the same "boat" as Patsy; I want to build a kayak but lack woodworking experience and the tools required for that kind of project. Looks like a stitch and glue (rather than a strip-built) kayak will be a lot easier to build by a beginner. Some kits are kind of expensive so I am trying to figure out if it will be possible for a beginner to build it from full size plans and maybe save some money.
From this thread, it looks like the tools required are: power sander, electric sabre saw (= jigsaw??), sharp carpenter's utility knife, low angle handplane, electric drill, and clamps (either from PVC pipe or spring clamps). Any other tools?
If building strictly from plans, besides the abovementioned tools and full size plans:
1. What book on stitch and glue kayak building will you strongly recommend for a beginner? Maybe any videos?
2. What kind of wood (plywood, mahogany, etc.) and what thickness?
3. What kind and brand of epoxy and fiberglass?
4. Besides full size plans for a kayak like the Shearwater Merganser 16 or CLC's Mill Creek 15, what other kayaks will you recommend as a first time S&G project?
5. Anything else you guys will recommend?
Thanks a lot for your help.
