: OK, you've got me. What the heck is a doorskin?

That's an easy one Patsy. It is what it is...... Actually, it's a plywood sheeting that is around 3mm-4mm thick, 3 ply and made of several different materials. Mahogany, Oak, Ash and possibly some others. They are 3' x 7' in size and are used for building your own doors. You build the frame and sheet it on both sides with the skin and you have a door! They are generally very clean on one side and maybe a lesser grade on the other, although still a nice looking surface usually. The ones I found were a one piece face and the back was still good although made up of several strips of ply. The usual problem found with them is the inside ply, which can be anything, any thickness and possibly have voids. WHAT it is usually isn't a problem, how thick can be if the outside veneer is very thin and the inner thick, but the voids can lead to some problems in strength or ability to bend and hold a fair curve.

You can watch the skins for the thickness of the layers but the voids either have to be avoided ( no pun intended ) or filled with epoxy or other suitable solution. They can be spotted either by rubbing your hand over the sheet and hearing the difference as your hand passes over then, or by puting a light behind the sheet and showing the thin material. These sheets can be used very effectively and cheaply with a little care and preperation. If the voids are small and few, you could probably cut around them all together.
