I agree with your comments regarding fiberglass, but dismissing the contributions of the skin to a skin-on-frame boat is erroneous. The skin is a stressed structural component of the boat. Especially with synthetic fabrics (nylon, polyester), the contribution to the strength and stiffness of the boat is substantial.
