That's a great idea for shaping. For finish sanding, these things work really well. They are easy to make out of scrap wood, too. Choose a radius, drill a hole lengthwise in the scrap, then saw the block lengthwise through the hole. Leave about 90* of arc on the hole, cut the sides down to a comfortable size, wrap sandpaper and go to work.
For outside curves I go another step, glue on sandpaper with contact cement, glue on velcro on the opposite side, stick it on my B&D Mouse, and presto! A shop-built profile sander.
