You couldn't be more wrong! Just because an image is posted on the web does not mean it is in the public domain. Images remain the property of the author -- unless the author states that they are public domain -- then the author has given up ownership of the image.

If you take an image from the web (by right clicking or other means) and use it for your own purposes without the permission of the author, it is theft. Plain and simple.
