Another option which might be better is to create a new window for the fist message in the thread. This would leave the original index as is and you can thenfollow the thread in the new window returning to the index by closing the thread window.

If your page is viewed from a webpage that already has it in a fram space may be a little tight. I like the idea of having the option though.
