While I'm sure you can use an internal strongback with any design, I advocate that people follow the directions provided by the designer. There are often good reasons why they suggest a certain method. And, even if you think the reasons aren't all that good, other aspects of the construction often assume you did everything else the as suggested. You could get into problems mixing methods.

That said, if you think you understand everything, it is certainly possible to use a different system, just be prepared for some improvising.
