The most important thing is to avoid abrupt changes in height (edges) between strips and of cours fill any gaps. You can save a lot of weight by not filling the weave. One problem that occurs is that the wood will absorb the epoxy slowly as it cures and you will end up with epoxy starved areas which lack strength and it will also allow moisture to penetrate. One solution is to go back and fill the weave. This will actually use more epoxy and more weight than seal coating the wood first.
I find a much better solution is to epoxy coat the wood first. Just a quick skim coat is all that is needed. You can lay the cloth almost immediatly after the seal coat, and if you left no puddles of epoxy you will still be able to move it into proper position and smooth the dry cloth with a paint brush. Then wet out. You can let the seal coat cure, but then you need to re-sand and remove any amine blush. So just get it all done at one time. Another advantage to this is it greatly minimizes outgassing (bubbles).
I also find it benificial to use a scrap of cloth at both ends and extend it back just a foot or so. Then overlap with remaining large piece of cloth by about 1 inch. The only reason that I do this is to save a little on cloth. Why make more scraps than you will use? I also run reinforcement strips at several position under the deck. I use a double layer of about 4" wide with 3" wide band on top of the 4 inch. You don't need this in the area of a bulk head behind the cockpit, but I still place several bands about a foot apart behind the rear bulk head and on the fore deck about half way between the front of the cockpit and the front bulk head.
Good luck and have fun
