I've built two Pygmy Terns, one with the hatch kit and one without. I glassed both sides of the components. Really minor weight gain, major strength gain. But you might want to check out the hatch lip and gasket system described on the One Ocean Kayak site. I just constructed two hatch lips out of fiberglass for my Cape Ann Storm and will never use the plywood approach again. Each lip weighed about 6 oz. and was very easy to fabricate. The only catch is that you make the hatch lips before gluing on the deck. I'm planning to float a pair of 3" minicell bulkheads with marine silicone sealant.
