In Response To: Material: Fiberglass question (Jon Limebrook)

: I'm working up a materials list for my next S&G. Is anyone familiar with a
: product in the Raka catalog called "3.25 oz. 8 harness satin
: glass"? It is described as being harder to wet out but very smooth
: and strong. It sounds like just the thing for the outside of the hull, but
: is it worth the extra effort? If you have used this cloth, please let me
: know what you think of it.

This is the glass that was promoted by "the person who can only be referred to here as G.R." In private correspondence with him, he indicated that it lays well and wets out fine. He typically applied 2-3 layers at the same time by rolling epoxy on the bare (sealed) hull, laying the first layer, rolling on additional epoxy, laying the second layer, then laying the third layer without additional epoxy. The excess from the first two layers wets out the third.

This produces a reasonably light, tough and flexible layup.
