Thanks to Addison for posting the pictures of the pull knob. The assembly consists of 6 pieces:

Pull pin
Wood insert for pull pin
Nut
O-ring
Hatch mount (consists of two pieces which are pressfitted to from a O-ring groove)

The shaft diameter of the pull pin is 5 mm and the top section has a diameter of 12.5mm. The top section is only 1.5 mm thick, i.e. nearly a flush fitting. The hatch is in my case about 6.5mm thick . The hatch mount is a close fit for the 5 mm shaft and contains an O-ring for sealing. The mount was made of two components to allow for an O-ring groove. There is no tool small enough to cut the groove otherwise. The nut was also specially made to allow a larger contact area. Everything is made from 316 stainless steel to ensure optimum rust resistance.

The first picture shows the knob in the retracted position, i.e. you don't see much. I placed the knob in the walnut ascent strip to minimize visual impact.

The second picture shows the nut from the bottom side. Note that the square section next to it is the bonding area for one of the four hooks for the bungees.

The third picture shows the pull knob from the top in the extended position.
