A hanging shelf with a plastic curtain is a great idea, John. Personally, I'm not too messy with glue, but I get shavings and sawdust everywhere[/]!! The same idea would work with my sketch if you simply stapled the plastic over the strongback before mounting the stations.

How were you thinking of hanging the shelf? If you keep the shelf rididly attached to the strongback, you'll have the benefit of its great lateral stiffness.

Didn't Rehd do something similar with his Strohngbench?
