Ed,
Rutabaga, one of the largest paddlesports shops in the U.S. is in Madison, Wisconsin - probably an hour to an hour and a half NW of Evanston by car. Their selection is overwhelming, and their people are the best! Wonderful place to visit if you will have access to a vehicle while here.
