:1. Entering the kajak when launching

It's a hassle to have your paddle fastened to the kayak while launching. If you're using the paddle as a rigid brace to stabilize the boat while you're getting in, try simply clamping it behind the coaming. Your thumb behind the paddle shaft, and your fingers wrapped into the cockpit. Once you're in, you just lift the paddle and paddle away.

: 2. Doing a wet entry.

Again, you can hold it against the coaming. But, secure straps make it easier. Seaward and Nimbus kayaks (both out of Canada) use systems with 1" flat nylon webbing and side-release buckles. Bungies stink--they allow too much stretch and the paddle/boat system moves around too much while you're trying to climb back in.

That is not to say there are never circumstances when you'll want to attach your paddle to the boat. Paddle leashes are a popular way to keep your paddle from drifting away from the boat if you drop your paddle while you're taking a drink, or stopping for a photograph. (keep in mind there is a small entanglement hazard present with a paddle leash)

You can also mount a paddle park (deck cleat) on the foredeck and pull a bungie over the paddle shaft and hook it under the cleat to secure the paddle.
