Pygmy has a paddle park system as part of their standard rigging. (See www.pygmyboats.com for pics). In brief, it involves a bungee (about 1 foot wide) near the front of the boat, under which you can slip one paddle blade. At the cockpit, the bungees are not tied off completely; there is a hook on one end. This can be unhooked from the padeye and placed over the paddle shaft (with the paddle's other paddle blade positioned off to one side of the cockpit) and rehooked to the padeye. I like the front bungee. It provides a very quick place to slip a standard paddle (not Greenland) and, for launching and landing (or taking a picture), I find it works fine by itself. This also works better w/ a feathered paddle, as the front paddle blade is horizontal under the bungee and the rear blade is approximately vertical and tucks in close to the boat. I don't like the bungee that hooks over the paddle shaft, as it is too difficult to hook and unhook. So I rarely use it and, since the front bungee works just fine by itself for a few seconds, I use it by itself. Since I like having my hands free to launch (off a beach), this system works pretty well. I am thinking of putting a cleat or some other device on my deck to use instead of the hooked-bungee. I'd like the security of the additional tiedown near the cockpit when I want it, and something that fastens and unfastens more quickly.
