Chas: What you are suggesting is certainly possible. In my case, I built up the shear strip for the deck directly on the forms from 3 strips of 1/4 x 1/4 material. The inner most piece was then used to outline the "swirls" on the deck.

No reason you couldn't do the same with the hull.
