There isn't a person alive who wants to breathe in Acitone fumes. If you do it outside, with protective gloves, you'll live. It won't react with steel wool like vinagar but its the best solvent for epoxy. You can scrape it off for starters but the steel wool will scrub the wood.
When I went to epoxy on the area, I used a wire brush with my fresh epoxy mix first and gave it a scrubbing with the new (correctly mixed) epoxy so there would be a good bond with any remaining resin in the wood. Then I laid my glass on it and finished etc.
By the way, vinigar is not good for your skin ( it removes the natural oils). To get epoxy off your skin, use automotive hand cleaner. It does a great job and has lanolin etc. Get the smooth GoJo type not any with abrasives.
