I made a similar lip using 2, 1/4" x 1/4" strips and glued them up with Pro Bond polyurethane. I glued the seam on the coaming ring (one piece, 3/8" thick, 12" tapered overlap at the joint) with the same glue. So far, everything is holding up fine.
