My understanding of the purpose of a balance brace is to be able to rest. I can't imagine resting for any long period of time in that mode. For me, it is a confidence building position. When I lay over and am supported by boat and paddle I feel more confident in my braces and ability to scull up or roll after falling over. I think it is less likely that I will need to use do a self rescue if I am comfortable laying on my side and then returning to a normal paddle stroke.
