few years ago I bought something similar to what you're describing,
and it turned out to be a really bad thing:

it absorbed water !
it's easy to check: deep it in water for, let's say, a day,
than take it out and lightly shake it with your hand.
it's supposed to come out completely dry - if it doesn't - bingo !

then squeeze it in your hand, there mustn't be even a single drop of water.
and if there is - bingo !

the glue on the material I bought was also lousy and didn't hold.
