I used bronze nails to attach the deck on my 18' self-design, and I didn't like the result much. In order to get the nail heads flush with the deck I had to give them an extra whack which caused an ugly dimple about half the time.
Then I had to file down the nail heads and fill the dimples with fairing compound. On the boat I'm building now I'm going to use #8 x 1" pan head sheet metal screws and fender washers, which will be removed after the epoxy sets up.
I'll still have to fill the holes but that'll be a snap. I'll use straps to hold things down while I'm screwing. OH COME ON! What filthy minds you all have.
