The trick is to keep the lines short and out of the cockpit. You want to be able to reach them when you need them, and not until then. This method of loading and unloading gear from a bow or stern storage area is particularly useful for those who have hatches in the bulkheads. Of course once those hatches are closed the lines are secured inside the storage area, completely enclosed, and far away from the paddler.
