Search amazon.com for strip canoe or strip kayak and you'll get not only a list of the few books on the subject, but alos books on similar construction techniques.

In addition to the two or three previously mentioned (Nick Schade has one, Ted Moores has two) there are excellent books by Gil Gilpatrick and David Hazen.

If you purchase strips you will get a very fine product, but if you have a table saw you can make your own for far less money. It will take about 2 hours to rip enough strips for one boat, or three hours to rip the strips for 2 boats. If you buy strips you'l find most being sold are 1/4 inch thick. You can go with thinner and lighter strips, down to 3/16, with no significant loss of strength. The strips you'll buy will probably have bead and cove edges. The strips you make may be made with such edges, or you may opt to keep the edges square. You may even decide to use your jointer to reshape the edge by a few degrees so these strips fit precisely when applied around curved sections of the hull.

If you are building two boats that welding equipment migh come in useful for building a trailer to tow them on, or a roof rack to carry them on your car.

Have fun building. Send along some pictures as you procede.
