Got your attention, huh? Actually this is my second typing of this message since the last one got lost in cyberspace.
My PVC tarp (retired billboard) is not working out well for a skin. Two problems: It's ungainly and it doesn't seal well, whether with heat OR the HH-66 cement designed for these kinds of tarps.
I am wondering about another unorthodox approach - this time with skinning.
If I could use a moderately stretchy fabric (knit polyester comes to mind. Remember how stretchy but strong those funky 70's fabrics were?), and skin the boat with that, then I would probably only need one seam to do the job. No more putting in darts and other seams to make things snug. Then perhaps (and it all hinges on this one) I could apply a polyurethane or thinned Liquid Nails or hypalon (?) to the fabric while it's on the boat. After it dried, I think the material would no longer stretch, but would still remain pliable.
Then I could coat the whole thing with a rubberized roof coating or hypalon.
So, if you were to test this idea out, which fabric and goop would you use and why?
ad delirium, ad skiningum,
Wayne
