Table saw, ROS, sanding disc in a 4" angle grinder, Japanese pull saw, elbow grease.

Umm...the first knee hooks were made with unsafe cuts on the table saw. The second set were glued in as rectangular blocks, and then shaped with the pull saw and grinder. If I did the original pieces over again, I'd glue, saw, grind them rather than making those finger-risking tablesaw cuts.

The best way would be to use 2-3 pieces of wood per side and glue them in to the rough shape. Then, carve/grind/sand the excess.

: is the under side of the cockpit recess where the hook is glued?

The hook is actually glued to the face of the coaming, and only a tiny bit wraps under the recess. I did fiberglass that seam between the recess and the block, since a lot of tension is placed on that line when you're really pulling with the knee.
