if you are considering butting or mitring the short strips rather than the boards themselves you may consider color or grain.

keep track of the boards as you rip them and swing/fold out any (all) 2 touching faces out longitudinally and whether you butt or scarf, the color and grain will flow from one to the other to give a more consistent strip, if that's important. if you wish you can now alternate bookmatch pairs at the front and back, but you would always get a join on the c/l. (kept at the side of the cockpit like s&g's if you wish).

can also just do the longitudinal grain/color match (scarf or butt) w/ cutting every 2nd strip in half to stagger the joins on the yak. like 2nd half - joint - full strip - joint - first half. then 2nd half etc. whichever of the 2 joint faces you place down may have a slight discrepancy due to the thickness of the wood or the lack of verticality of the grain.
