: Second I’d suggest using northern white cedar for your hull bottom. Northern
: white cedar is much more flexible and is the ideal wood for steam / dry
: heat bending. You can use a heat gun to bend (any wood) the strip while in
: place and glue immediately.

I have had great success using a heat gun (paint stripper) type of heat gun. I use one with adjustable settings so it is less likely to burn the strips. I'm sure that anyone seeing me bending the strips would laugh at what I look like but this is what I do:

I mark the cedar strip with light pencil marks in the area of bend required. Then I place the strip in a "jorgenson" clamp. (wood clamps with the two corkscrew handels) I clamp anywhere from several inches to several feet back of the area I want to twist and bend. If it is a tight twist with sharp transitions I will clamp close. For more gradual transitions I clamp further back. I place another clamp at the other end of the area to be twisted. I use two clamps so I can get more torque on the wood. Since I don't have a workbench with a vise or clamp attached I proceed to sit on the floor and hold one clamp end down with my leg or foot and use my hand to twist the opposite end. Before I start to twist I warm both sides of the strip constantly moving the heat gun. I apply more heat in the areas that require a tighter twist and less for a more moderate twist. Then twist the wood. You can easily do compound curves twisting in two directions at once. Hold the twist while you continue to heat and continue to hold it once you stop heating until the wood cools. Remove from the clamps and check the fit. If the fit isn't quite right, place back in the clamps and modify the twist. I usually will remark the strip in the location to modify the twists and bends. Sometimes I will wet the wood to assist with the the heating and bending.
