Beam scale sensitivity

Hi there.

Moving the pivot point ABOVE the beam will REDUCE sensitivity, while putting the pivot BELOW the beam will INCREASE sensitivity. Similar to using a wooden coat hanger: You can reach an equilibrium of sorts with unequal weights hanging from each end (non-sensitive), while trying to balance an inverted hanger (sensitive) will be much harder.

Physics-wise, the inverted hanger will balance only when the center of gravity of the beam is exactly above the pivot supporting it. A 'hanging' beam will more easily find a stable position because the C-O-G will try to move itself directly under the pivot.
