If you are getting a tool like this consider the dual action disc and belt sander. I find I use the belt more than the disc. comes in great for making scarf joints on the cedar strips, and gunwhales for a canoe. I also used it to make the deck ends for my kayak deck.
I bought the cheapest one I could find... you get what you pay for, but it is good enough for what I need so far. It would be under powered for working larger pieces of wood, and the 'table' that butts into the disk sander is not as ridgid as I would like for getting right angles. two of many things to look at when buying one.
