: The solid cedar paddles I've made have been between 25 and 32 ounces. The
: lightweight paddle was too thin and flexible for my taste. It seems that
: 30 ounces is a good weight for a cedar paddle, though it can easily vary
: from that due to density variations in the wood.
Thanks Brian, that sounds about right. I'd think using a hollow core would save 2-3 oz, basically the weight of the cedar that otherwise would have been in there.
: It seems to me that Greenland paddles feel considerably lighter than they
: are, since the weight is more evenly distributed along the length, rather
: than being concentrated at the tips as in a Euro paddle. Consequently, I
: don't go out of my way to try to make them light, I just shape 'em the way
: I like 'em and the weight is what it is.
I suppose that the euro weight distribution is significantly different. But after paddling with the rock, maybe I'm a little more sensitive to it. Lightness is good, where stiffness is not compromised. I'm just wondering if the weights I measured sounded within reason. I think the scale could be modified for more accuracy, and I'll do that.
