Shawn and Jim's suggestions of using verneers may be the way to go.
Cutting the 1/8" ash strips, gave my old table saw a real workout, even with a new freud blade on it. It also created lots of very fine dust almost smoke like. However, once set up, you can cut lots of extra for the next several yaks that you just know you will be building.
Worked for me.
