In Response To: Material: gelcoat? (joaquin)
: Good morning america...
: Iīm reading Hansonīs excellent book SEA KAJAK TOURING, X-mas present, and
: come across the term gel coat finish on fiberglas kajaks.
: What exactly is this gelcoat and can you use it on the conventional epoxi
: finish of a S&G kajak. Is is better than varnish?
: Thanks Joaquin
Gel coats, we also called them Surface coats and used them as the first and second epoxy coat when making master molds for die's and other work. They are thicker then laminating and casting epoxies and can be brushed on a virtical wall and stay inplace if not put on too heavy whereas other epoxies would just run off.
