Thanks for the input. I used a set of scrapers that I bought from Woodworkers Warehouse for about $20 and as long as you keep them sharp, that seems to work pretty well, but they "chatter" a bit and tend to dig in and make "waves". I then sanded with 60 grit and a foam pad. This is working pretty good, I might be too anal about the finish though.
I am doing the version in Ted Moores book in cedar strip. I bought Nick's book and was concerned that a kayak might be too hard for my first boat, so I thought I would try the canoe first and then move on to a kayak. The little canoe looked easier.
